Sport Venus (2008)

These sculptures incorporates iconic images from high art and ancient craft techniques to create a new contemporary icon. The series hybridizes Venus busts with the symbolic emblems of popular sports such as basketball, soccer, baseball, swimming, and golf. The key design that identifies each sport is inlaid in mother-of-pearl on lacquered surface. By bringing together the icons of beauty and sports, the series investigates the ways in which female beauty is objectified and commodified as public entertainment in contemporary consumer society. The project aims to dissolve the boundary between high art and craft as well as reviving traditions from different parts of the world in a new hybrid aesthetics.
